Subject: Been some time.
Its been 15 years since the last review. I'm 28 as im writing this. Listened to the 45min playing in the band. They really did it to em huh?
The last guy was right about the mind melting around 14/15 min. But i think that the rest of the song was great too. it too me away for a while.
Thanks!

Subject: The long and the short of it
The long of it: Longest Playing in the Band ever performed at almost 47 minutes. But that doesn't make it the best. Not even close. But there is a mind splitting meltdown around 14 minutes or so into it that's worth the admission price. But beyond the 20 minute mark things really do drag on a bit.
The short of it: Above average recording of an average (by 1974 standards) show. There are better shows this year, there are certainly worse.

Subject: China Doll doesn't download
I'm sure this is an excellent show. What I've streamed so far sounds great - almost too good to be an audience tape. But - China Doll gives me 121 kb when I download the Shorten file. Without China Doll, I can't make a complete Disk 2 as tracked here, so I'm putting Playin'-Around on one disk and will wait for China Doll to get repaired. I'm giving it 5 stars (may revise that if the Playin' disappoints).
BTW, the lack of lossless whole show zipped files means for me that I am picking and choosing what to download, so I'm avoiding the whole pre-WRS first set.
Edited: The Playin' disappointed - NOT!!!!!!!!!
46 minutes of swirling, sometimes maniacal, always spellbinding music.
The sound is unbelievably clear for an audience tape - many soundboards aren't this crispy. You only hear the audience at the beginnings and ends of songs. They must have been utterly blown away by the Playin'.
And China Doll downloaded fine just now. Yeah!!!

I'm in total agreement about '74 audience tapes - soundboards of that era don't even hint at the power of the live show. Ah, well - guess one had to be there.
Not much into statistics, but this has to be one of the longest versions of Playing in the Band...

Subject: audience devotional indeed
Subject: audience devotional indeed
this is a fine audience recording of 1974. in fact, this may be better than seattle's board in some respects since the board is relatively hacked up. for audience lovers, it's a gem -- full sound, a mostly respectful crowd, and ambient perception.
what i mean by the last thing is that one can sense the hall, the space of the place and the way the sound filled it from this recording. every audience (even the early crud aud tape of miami jai-lai i first acquired in '85) recording from '74 confirms that the wall of sound was the bomb. as the gentle coda vocals of china doll wind down, one can hear bill's high hat snap shut with precision!!! oh, to have been there, been turned on and seen that.
do your ears a favor. had we more auds like this, no one would be complaining much about the boards being pulled.
i see no reason why not to give this one five stars.

One of the best Playing in the Band's in my opinion. The first three minutes just make you wanna dance!
